Review Fest! Part Two!

Alright, after a short break, I'm back to finish off the review fest. Robin, I actually dropped my summer class as I was tired of leaving class everyday feeling like I had learned absolutely nothing. I'm still taking one online but it doesn't have a ton of work so I have some free time. Anyway, I guess back to the reviews.

So I had heard mixed reviews going into this. My parents liked it. Beth had talked to some 6 year olds that didn't like it. I was not real excited going into it. So, not surprisingly, after a long day of watching movies, I fell asleep a couple times in the first half hour or so of the movie. The short before the movie was pretty good, but honestly I can't remember what it was about. Anyway, all in all, while Wall-e was a kind of cute love story between two weird little robots, it had another motive. In actuality, it was a really long public service announcement. I don't mind when movies are political if they're documentaries. But when they're disguised as animated kid's movies I have a problem with it. I also don't mind movies that are philosophical and make you think if it goes along with the movie or serves a purpose in the plot. But that wasn't the point of the philosophy in "Wall-e." I saw this movie as a psa by Pixar to get people to recycle and take care of our planet more. It wasn't very entertaining as a movie and it really just kind of annoyed me. It had some funny or cute parts but all in all, I wasn't real impressed. I enjoyed Pixar's previous efforts a lot more than this one.

I wasn't willing to pay money to go see this movie in the theater. It looked pretty dumb from the trailers. And really, it lived up to that expectation. It had some funny parts. It just seems like a round about way for Mike Myers to make a movie that's kind of about hockey since he's Canadian. Jessica Alba still pisses me off for some reason. Despite the fact that he's dating my lady, Justin Timberlake's character is pretty funny. Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan are good as the hockey announcers. For some reason I really enjoyed the musical parts where Myers' character plays covers of songs we all know on the sitar. The story was pretty dumb though. Myers is the Love Guru who is hired by Alba's hockey team to fix their star black hockey play who can no longer play since his wife left him for a rival player (JT) who has a huge junk and is the opposing goalie in the Stanley Cup Finals. Pretty dumb but some funny moments. Wait for the DVD if you really want to see it.

That's it for the review fest. The next couple weeks have some movies I want to see coming out, so I'll have to find some time to go see them. I'll try to be more punctual when posting reviews too, so some of the movies are actually still in theaters when I post them.

Review Fest! Part One!

It has been over a month since I last reviewed a movie. Really that's because it was almost a month since I had seen a movie. But since last Monday, I've seen six. Four were in the theater, with three of them coming back to back in one day and two were in my room via the internet. So I'll review them in order now I suppose.

This movie seemed very Matrix-esque. Which makes sense as I think it was made by the same guys. It was fun. It had a lot of action. It was fairly violent, with odd slow motion cuts during some of the violence. But, it was also funny in parts. You get to see Ms. Jolie's butt, which is always a bonus. There were also a couple of pretty good twists near the end of the movie. Really though, this one just falls in with the lasted Indy movie. It has parts that are just ridiculous. I know its a movie and is make believe, but some of the stuff they're putting in movies these days just is goofy. Basic run down. Loser kid finds out from hot Jolie that he is the son of the world's greatest assassin and that he has to kill his father's killer. Like I said there are some interesting twists. But it has some cool effects and chase scenes which were still fun. If you want to see it, its worth seeing in the theater because of the effects, but it isn't a must-see in the theaters. You can wait for the DVD. And I'd see it then at the very least. But then I like movies that are funny, action packed, ridiculous, and that show Angie's butt. I'm a guy after all.

I feel like Adam Sandler's movies have gone way down recently. I also saw Chuck and Larry on my computer. It almost seems to me like he's making movies now because he and his friends need money. He brings back both Rob Schneider and Nick Swarsden in this one. And Mr. Dave Matthews makes his second consecutive appearance in a Sandler vehicle. The interaction with Swarsden's character's mother is pretty entertaining. So is the foot thing that you see in the trailer. But really the movie is just okay in my opinion. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater. I laughed a couple times, but not too much really. Oh and no one would ever confuse an Israeli accent with an Australian accent. That's too much. I liked John Turturro as the terrorist, but thought Michael Buffer as the main bad guy was stupid. Dave was funny as a racist redneck though. I think Sandler likes giving him goofy roles. The quick plot of this one. Israel's top counter terrorist fakes his own death so he can go to America and pursue his dream of becoming a hair dresser. Yes, even the plot sounds retarded. Anyway, wait for the DVD if you have to see this one.

"Get Smart"

Okay, first off, walking in to this movie, the old guy tearing tickets gave me a run down of the movie. Well it wasn't really a run down, but it was something to the effect of, "Get Smart. Funny remake the old TV series starring Steve Carell. Funny guy. Down at the end of the hall on your right." All of that was correct except that it was the last theater on the left, which I luckily figured out before walking into "Sex in the City." I would've had to walk back out and beat that nice old man to death if I hadn't figured that out. I was hesitant to go see this one. I figured it was one of those movies where they show you all the good parts in the trailers and commercials for it. Luckily, I was wrong. This movie was really funny and had some decent action too. There were at least two parts where I was cracking up laughing. One of them was a scene with Carell in the bathroom of an airplane. It isn't what you're thinking, but its really entertaining. I don't remember the other one though. Annie Hathaway is adorable as usual. The bit players are decent with Champ from "Anchorman" and Cheeseburger Eddie from "the Longest Yard" as well as Heroes Masa Oki playing various characters. Even Seinfeld's David Putty makes an appearance. Basically, Kaos finds out the identity of Control's agents except for Carell and Hathaway. They must then stop Kaos from making and using or selling a bunch of nuclear missiles. Fun is had by all. Go see it, its a good one.

"Hancock"

This was another one I was hesitant to go see. I wasn't real sure of the premise, other than lazy, clumsy, black super hero guy. And while it is also that, there's also a twist that I think is a really cool idea for a movie and white public relations guy trying to help black super hero guy. This has some funny moments as well as some pretty good fight scenes. There are some ridiculous moments in this one too, but I think they work and are expected more in this than in a movie like Indiana Jones. Will Smith was good, but I think he has to try to not be good. Charlize Theron was way hot. Bateman did a good job as the nervous white pr guy too. And whoever the kid was, he was pretty funny. I've seen him in something before, but I'm not sure what it was. I'll have to look him up on imdb.com. So Smith's character is the only person like himself. Bateman tries to clean up his image. Someone knows Hancock's secret. Bad things happen. Its good and really not too long. I kind of thought they were going to drag it on a little long, but they didn't. Again, not a must see at the theater, but if you're looking for something light and fun, this works.

Okay, I need to take a break from this and eat some dinner. I'll be back a little later to wrap up the last two movies, which are Wall-e and the Love Guru.

Indy

Yep, this time I'll be reviewing Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Before I get to that I thought I'd mention a few more movies I hope to be seeing and reviewing in the near future. They include but are not limited to, The Strangers, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, and Hancock. I also will take the time to say I am a little disappointed that no one has left me feedback yet. But then, I'm probably the only one reading these at this point anyway, and I'm not going to give myself feedback. That's just weird. Anyway, on to the movie.

Okay so Collin doesn't ever get to movies on time. And of course we timed this so that basically I got to Medford and we went to the movie. And amazingly enough we made it for the previews and Daves had time to get drinks and popcorn and spill the popcorn everywhere. It was awesome. Then he didn't sit with us, which was weird, but understandable since the theater was packed. Anyway, the movie. I had read interviews or an interview with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in which they said the plot of the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise would deal with aliens. I assumed they were screwing with us and just didn't want to give away what the plot was. I was wrong. That's right, Indy 4 is focused around aliens. Pretty weird huh? Granted, it is still fun because it is an Indiana Jones movie, but it gets a little ridiculous in parts. We get new friends, in the form of Shia LaBeouf (or however you spell his name). And we find old friends along the way (Karen Allen). The movie, as most Indy movies are, is full of action and adventure. You have betrayals, and car chases, and fights. You have funny one liners and other jokes. All in all it was an entertaining movie. Was it all that I expected it to be? No. But I think it would've been hard for the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones saga to live up to all our expectations after so many years away. I would like to see it again though to better appreciate it.

First Five Movies

Okay here we go. I realized after my post last night that I actually saw another movie in there by myself, so Forgetting Sarah Marshall will also be included in this group of reviews. Hope you guys like what I've got to say and I'm looking forward to some feedback. On to the movies.

Great movie. I really enjoyed this one. Kevin Spacey is great in it as is Larry Fishburn. Plus I enjoyed Kate Bosworth as well. Basically if you don't know already its the story of an MIT student trying to make money for Med school. He gets recruited by Spacey's character into a group that goes to Vegas on weekends and counts cards at the blackjack table. He starts off just trying to make $300,000 to pay for Med school, but we all know that isn't gonna be it. The movie is fairly dark, but that isn't real surprising since a lot of it takes place in Vegas. The characters work well together and Spacey is always a pretty good "bad" guy. The plot is fairly straight forward. Learn the system, work the system, don't get caught by the system. There's also a little bit of a love story that I didn't really feel was necessary. And you get an idea of what the characters have to sacrifice to make their plan work. I enjoyed, see it if you get a chance.

We chose between this and Leatherheads. Basically we ended up in this movie because we just missed Leatherheads and would've had to wait too long for the next showing. This movie was not what I was expecting and really should have been called "The Vine." Sure the majority of the movie takes place on top of some old Ruins, but its the Vine that grows on the ruins that is the problem here. Pretty gory. Pretty dumb. Not a whole lot of good acting. I also thought it would be a little bit scary, but it wasn't really. Sure there were a couple parts where you weren't positive what was going to happen, but it wasn't real hard to figure out and it wasn't as scary as it could've been. Don't go see it in the theater that's for sure. Maybe rent it if you like hokey movies that are trying to be scary. But even then I'd say its pushing it.

After seeing this movie I decided I needed to fly to Hawaii and find Mila Kunis. She is adorable in this movie. Luckily, I was warned ahead of time by Collin about the full frontal male nudity in the film, which made it less of a shock. I still could've done without it, but it worked I suppose. One of the guys from Knocked Up plays the main character and does a good job of it. He writes music for tv shows and is also working on a rock opera about vampires. He plays one of the song while in a bar in Hawaii and its a pretty funny scene. There's also a part where he plays the theme from the Muppet Show on the piano that killed me. Its funny. Its pretty entertaining. And in my opinion its even sort of a chick flick. Pretty cute. The ending is also pretty predictable but I won't ruin it for you. If you like going to movies go see it, but you can easily wait for the DVD if you don't want to spend ten bucks at the theater.

"Iron Man"
Seen on: May 2, 2008
At: San Mateo Century 12
With: Jill

I didn't even have to drag Jill to this one. She wanted to see it. And those of you who know me know I love movies based on comic books. This was no exception. Robert Downey Jr. plays tony Stark, a weapons inventor I guess you would call him. Basically the story is him getting kidnapped by a terrorist group in Afghanistan. They want him to make them one of his most recent weapons. He doesn't want to do it and comes up with something else instead. The movie takes off from there. It's got some cool cars although only one of them really gets driven. Plus they ruined my favorite car of the group without even starting it. Jeff Bridges does a good job as the bad guy. Terrence Howard did a good job in his role as Stark's military handler. And although I'm not a huge fan of hers, I though Gwyneth Paltrow was good as well. The story is basically the origin of Iron Man which is a good way to develop the character for the sequels. Aside from all the obvious action, this movie also has some funny moments. Definitely one to see on the big screen. I enjoyed it.

"Made of Honor"
Seen on: May 18, 2008
At: San Mateo Century 12

I told Jill I'd go see this with her, but only because I wanted to see it too. Of course I was one of like three guys in a theater of about 25 people. That was a little awkward. I like Patrick Dempsey. And I thought Michelle Monaghan was the one bright spot in Ben Stiller's "Heartbreak Kid." They had good chemistry on screen. Tiny shorts guy was hilarious. Jill loved Kevin McKidd as the Scotsman. Honestly, this is a total chick flick. It had some funny parts but is pretty ridiculous and sappy. It was cute and I enjoyed it. But, I think if you want to see it, you can wait til it comes out on DVD. Seeing it in the theater doesn't really at anything to it and if you're a guy you won't have to sit in a theater full of women feeling a little awkward laughing at certain things like I did. Oh the plot for those that don't know. Dempsey is a man whore and Monaghan is his best friend. She goes off to Scotland for six weeks for work and he realizes he's in love with her. He plans to tell her when she gets back and of course she's engaged to McKidd upon her return. She of course asks him to be her Made of Honor and he proceeds to try to break up the marriage from within.

So there you have it. My first attempt at actually using this blog for what I want it to be. Let me know what you think. I know it isn't a typical review where you get critiques on film style and camera angles and how the movies were shot. But I think this type of review is more user friendly. Most people are trying to figure out whether they'll like a movie or not before they go see it. They really don't care about all that other stuff. If there's anything you'd all like to see me do different in the future, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The Point of My Blog

Okay. So I've had an account on here for a while but never took the time to set up my blog. Mostly that was due to the fact that I could never come up with an idea as to what the point of this thing should be. I think I finally came up with something. I've been toying with the idea of somehow figuring out how to become a movie critic. Most of those who know me know that I love movies. I have to admit I like going to the theater more than sitting at home watching movies, but that isn't always feasible since I'm still a college student. Plus I don't always have people to go to the movies with. Luckily I got over the awkwardness of going to the movies by myself. And, also luckily, though more for myself, I've found a movie buddy again in my friend Jill from high school who I recently reconnected with. She and I have seen four movies together in about two months. So the point of my blog, to go along with my desire to somehow figure out how to become a movie critic, is to provide whoever cares to read this thing, with reviews of movies I see. I'm trying to decide if I should review movies I see on DVD, or if I should just stick to movies I see in the theater. If you have an opinion or suggestion let me know. Also, as I write these reviews, if there are things you'd like to see added or taken out, let me know that too. I'm trying to figure out what people like to see from their critic, so criticism and suggestions are welcome. For now, what I'm planning on doing is similar to what I've done on my blog on my myspace account. That means I'll list the movie, who I saw it with, where I saw it, when I saw it, a basic rundown of the plot without giving too much away, what I liked, what I disliked, and then general conclusions for each movie. I'm also trying to decide if I want to grade movies and if I should include the genres of the movies. So, I guess that's it for now. I'm tired and have to study for finals so I'm gonna crash. The first four reviews I'll put up are the movies I've seen with Jill--21, The Ruins, Iron Man, and Made of Honor. So look for those in the coming days.
